We made St. Bittman's (fake)arepas last night. Once I added at least 1/4-1/2 cup extra cornmeal to the batter and then spooned it into the pan they were damn, damn tasty, and probably would be even more if we had used cilantro too. It's sort of like a hush puppy pancake.
I made some seasoned black beans (garlic, onion, chipotle chile powder, cumin, chili powder) and poached some eggs in the simmering beans (this is a really tasty way to make poached eggs, and it's a cheap source of protein). The beans and the (fake)arepas with Mr. Pubby's salsa fresca was perfect.
The comments on the Bitten blog pretty much sum it up - the dough as called for is too soupy, and apparently it's absolutely not an arepa, but regardless it's yummy.
